How it’s done

When I see something I like, I feel a need to record it. Using sketches and photographs I compose a picture firstly with a pencil or paint on paper. I then paint onto calico and, working from the background to the foreground, I use layers of fabrics or paper which may need wax, bleach or dye. I cut shapes which are often very small and stick them down. I try to complete all the sticking before stitching.

Here is a picture in the early stages. I have used a magic marker to draw outlines onto the calico. The sky, road and greenery are painted on with acrylics.

Final stages:

Having collected a pile of suitably coloured fabric for the houses, I cut them roughly to size and use bondaweb on the back then cut exactly, then iron them on the picture. The balconies below are made of pieces of lace stuck on with PVA.

Using my trusty Bernina  I then free machine stitch starting at the top. A few dabs of glitter glue suitable for fabric completes the picture.
